From first questions to original discovery
What if a sixteen-year-old could advance marine science? What if a high school theater student uncovered a lost chapter of Florida history? What if the next breakthrough in AI ethics came from a teenager on the Gulf Coast? Capstone Research at SSES transforms raw curiosity into disciplined inquiry — training students to ask better questions, design rigorous studies, and defend their findings before peers and experts.

Following an entire year of research and study, the culminating Capstone document is an argument built on original data, primary sources, or creative work, developed with guidance and oversight from experts on and off campus.
Candidates are identified near the end of their junior year, when they have typically taken every class offered in a particular discipline. The students put forth a proposal for original interdisciplinary research that will help build knowledge in an area of specific interest.
It's the pinnacle of the Capstone program. Seniors present their findings to an audience of faculty, peers, parents, and external experts. For Ocean Academy students, this is a documented requirement — an oral presentation at the annual RISE Exposition with poster and data.
Milestones
Apprentice · Grades 6–8
An eighth grader designs her first independent experiment on microplastics in local waterways. A sixth grader's science fair poster draws a crowd at the RISE exhibition.
Practitioner · Grades 9–10
Tenth graders present their literature reviews to a panel of teachers, defending their chosen methodology. A freshman realizes his casual interest in AI now requires reading peer-reviewed papers.
Authorship · Grades 11–12
A senior in Ocean Academy stands before the RISE audience, presenting original research — the product of a year of questions, struggle, and discovery.
Distinction · Alumni 18+
An SSES graduate publishes her undergraduate research in a marine biology journal. Another advises policy makers using the analytical tools he honed in the Capstone program.
