Overview of Signature Programs

NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) has identified five critical areas for independent schools to address.  The primary areas are:

  • Financial sustainability
  • Environmental responsibility
  • Global awareness and relevance
  • Programmatic/curricular foresight
  • Demographic accessibility

We have simplified our approach to these five key areas by stating that we, as a school, will help make students aware of their responsibilities to the world in the 21st century.  Once students leave Saint Stephen’s, it is our hope that they will be engaged citizens in the world by demonstrating ecological, economic, and social responsibilities.

The signature programs will coordinate efforts for students in grades pre-k through 12:

  • To share a variety of classroom lessons with students from other countries via webcam internet transmission.
  • To instruct our students in Mandarin language.
  • To practice language immersion in our Classical and Modern Language courses.
  • To encourage LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification in construction of new buildings and facilities within our own campus.
  • To schedule and facilitate a guest speaker series promoting Atlas Initiative goals.
  • To promote interdisciplinary teaching possibilities among our faculty.
  • To call attention to and promote library resources, articles, books, and films consistent with Atlas Initiative goals.
  • To maintain communication with schools in Tanzania, Africa and Guilin, China and to seek other communication within the global academic community.
